Mechon Hadar is holding a four-day Summer Institute geared toward Jewish professionals! The seminar, which this year will be focused on learning texts and engaging in topics related to broad themes of social justice, will take place from June 25-29. It is intended to draw an audience from a wide variety of backgrounds looking to spend time deepening their connection to Jewish learning around relevant and substantive issues related to social justice.

We are pleased to partner wth Repair The World, Hillel International, and the Pedagogy of Partnership in running this week. In addition to offerings for Jewish professionals working a wide range of fields, we will have specialty tracks of learning for Day School Educators and Hillel Professionals. For information on the Day School Educators' Track, please click here. Information about our partners

Repair the World, an organization dedicated to making deep and meaningful volunteer service a central part of Jewish life. Repair the World enables people to transform their neighborhoods, cities and lives through meaningful service experiences, rooted in Jewish values, history and heritage.

Hillel International - As the largest Jewish student organization in the world, Hillel builds connections with emerging adults at more than 550 colleges and universities, and inspires them to direct their own path.  During their formative college years, students are challenged to explore, experience, and create vibrant Jewish lives.

Hillel International’s Ezra Fellowship is an early career fellowship for young pluralistic educators in the making! We are proud to partner with Mechon Hadar to provide pluralistic Jewish learning for our fellows, and to bring their supervisors to the Jewish Professionals Institute each year!

The Pedagogy of Partnership (PoP) provides cutting edge professional development to 21st century educators who are leading and teaching the Jews of tomorrow. PoP’s comprehensive model enables learners of all ages to develop the habits of wonder, empathy and responsibility toward others and toward Torah. It also teaches learners concrete tools to improve their communication and interpretive skills and be better able to seek understanding, work collaboratively and engage with Torah as an ongoing source of Jewish wisdom and instruction.

Beit Rabban Day School is a preschool and elementary Jewish day school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.  Beit Rabban is proud to partner with Mechon Hadar on the creation and implementation of the Standards for Fluency in Jewish Text and Practice.

The goals of our learning together include:

  • Helping people to encounter each other through deep text learning.
  • Facilitating discussions around how to take back to your workplace "pocket Torah" that will be useful in real-life work scenarios with colleagues, lay leaders, volunteers and your constituents.
  • Broadening our own knowledge and understanding of Jewish learning.

Day School Educator's Track

The Day School Educator's Track of the Jewish Professionals Institute offers two opportunities for enhancing Jewish learning in the Day School classroom. The first is an in-depth exploration of the Pedagogy of Partnership with Dr. Orit Kent and Allison Cook. The second is an opportunity for schools to send cohorts of faculty who are committed to bring Mechon Hadar's Fluency Standards into their school environments. These fluency standards were developed in partnership with Beit Rabban Day School, where they are currently being implemented.

  1. Pedagogy of Partnership Track with Dr. Orit Kent and Allison Cook
Would you like to see an increased love of Jewish learning in your classrooms or work environments? Are you thinking about experimenting with pedagogies that will stay true to our tradition even as they match the needs of our 21st Century lives?  Come and participate in an intensive introductory training in the Pedagogy of Partnership: Focus on teaching techniques that support ethical, spiritual and intellectual growth in your learners through the design and practice of havruta learning, group learning and other modalities. Translate your learning into practice and discover methods for strengthening your students’ relationship with their peers and with Jewish texts—all with support and guidance from leading experts, Dr. Orit Kent and Allison Cook, developers of the research-based pedagogy, “Pedagogy of Partnership.” This program is ideally suited to teachers of 4th grade and up.

  2. Fluency Standards in Jewish Education Track with Lisa Exler
Does your school have a vision for Jewish education that includes not only Jewish identity-building but also fluency in the texts and practices of Judaism? Are you looking for a clear definition of what this fluency looks like and roadmaps of the content, skills, and dispositions that should be taught in order to help your students achieve it? Are you ready to immerse yourself in a Beit Midrash setting and engage in your own Torah learning? The Fluency Standards Track of the Jewish Professionals’ Institute at Mechon Hadar is intended for a select group of day school educators who are committed to bringing the Standards for Fluency in Jewish Text and Practice (developed by Hadar and Beit Rabban Day School) into their schools.

Highlights of the Day School Educators' Track include:

  • Bring effective and inspiring learning to your classroom through the Pedagogy of Partnership with Orit Kent and Allison Cook.
  • Immersing yourself in Hadar’s Standards for Fluency in Jewish Text and Practice and working with their author, Lisa Exler, to develop a plan to implement the standards in your school.
  • Learn Rabbinic texts with Mechon Hadar's core faculty in a lively Beit Midrash setting.
  • Build relationships with fellow educators who share the desire to increase the love of Jewish learning in their classrooms and schools.
Please note this program is open to any educators in the day school field.

The cost for this track is $360 per person which includes two meals per day. Members of JPRO Network are eligible to receive a $100 discount to attend this week of learning. Total cost to JPRO members will be $260. Please be in touch with Andrew Belinfante to receive this discount. We also have limited scholarships available. If you are interested in a scholarship, please contact Andrew Belinfante.
